Playing in the sand or messing around in the mud never did a child any harm. Nature is full of good bacteria and it makes good sense to expose our children to it.

  • We have 10 trillion own body cells but are populated by 100 trillion bacteria. If we laid them out lengthwise they would go all the way around the world.
  • Most bacteria are found in the colon.
  • It takes around three years for the microbiota to settle into an infant’s system.
  • The microbes in our intestine weigh between 1 and 1.5 kg.
  • There are around 400 to 500 different bacterial strains in the intestine, comprising 30,000 to 50,000 species.
  • Scientists assume that bacteria communicate with each other.
  • Unfortunately, antibiotics kills the good bacteria as well as the bad.
