Our little ones need to become accustomed to milk and learn how to drink it. In addition, babies’ tummies still have a small capacity and the digestive system is very sensitive. Bringing a little milk back up is normal. But when the reflux is so great that it causes the baby to suffer, an anti-reflux infant formula with [carob bean gum](https://www.hochdorf.com/en/baby-care/glossary/glossar-detail/term/carob-bean-gum/) can ease the symptoms. Carob bean gum is a natural thickening agent which binds the milk and increases the consistency, helping it to stay down better. - A natural product, extracted from the seeds of the carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua). - Obtained from grinding the seed kernels embedded in the long leathery pods of the tree. - A white/yellowish, odourless powder with no distinctive taste. - Also knowns as locust bean gum, St. John’s bread, algarroba, carubin; it is present as E410b in general consumer products. - A natural, viscous, soluble and indigestible but fermentable dietary fibre that belongs to the polysaccharides (long chains of simple sugars). - Successfully used – for decades – in special dietary formulas for infants. - Thickening properties offer an effective solution for gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR). - Prebiotic properties: adding [*GOS*](https://www.hochdorf.com/en/babycare/glossary/glossary-detail/term/galactooligosaccharides/) relieves the effects of hard stools and/or associated colic. - The ‘good’ bacteria in the large intestine (bifidobacteria and lactobacilli) can use GOS for their own growth. This is a process of degradation by fermentation. GOS is a non-digestible but fermentable fibre. - Stimulated growth of the ‘good’ bacteria leads to an increased bacterial biomass. This results in an increase in the volume and softness of stools. In general: a better gut motility. ![HOCHDORF fresh carob bean gum](https://www.hochdorf.com/fileadmin/_processed_/csm_HOC_INS_2_17_BC_Carob_gum_pods_d150306966.jpg "HOCHDORF fresh carob bean gum")   ![HOCHDORF dried carob bean gum](https://www.hochdorf.com/fileadmin/_processed_/csm_HOC_INS_2_17_BC_Carob_bean_gum_c731d39a3d.jpg "HOCHDORF dried carob bean gum")   --- Further information   - Article ["Functional gastrointestinal disorders"](https://inside.hochdorf.com/en/functional-gastrointestinal-disorders?hsLang=en) - Short article ["Regurgitation: Olivia's story"](https://inside.hochdorf.com/en/regurgitation-olivias-story?hsLang=en) - Article ["Prebiotics in infant formula – part 1"](https://inside.hochdorf.com/en/prebiotics-in-infant-formula?hsLang=en) - Article ["Prebiotics in follow-on foods – part 2"](https://inside.hochdorf.com/en/prebiotics-in-follow-on-foods?hsLang=en) - Overview ["Specialist formula"](https://www.hochdorf.com/en/baby-care/products/special-formula/) ## Leave a comment ![Janny Vedder](https://inside.hochdorf.com/hubfs/Blog/Portraitbilder%20Autoren/Janny-Vedder150x150.png) Written by [Janny Vedder](https://inside.hochdorf.com/en/author/janny-vedder) ### Posts by Topic - [Baby Care (42)](https://inside.hochdorf.com/en/tag/baby-care) - [Food Solutions (30)](https://inside.hochdorf.com/en/tag/food-solutions) - [Nutrition & Innovation (14)](https://inside.hochdorf.com/en/tag/nutrition-innovation) - [Corporate (3)](https://inside.hochdorf.com/en/tag/corporate) ### Recent Articles ### Popular Articles #### Related posts [![Five steps to create your own infant formula brand with HOCHDORF](https://inside.hochdorf.com/hubfs/HOCHDORF%20Inside/Ausgaben%20Online/Header_Bild_HOC_Inside_Private_Label-1.png)](https://inside.hochdorf.com/en/five-steps-to-create-your-own-infant-formula-brand-with-hochdorf?hsLang=en) ##### [Five steps to create your own infant formula brand with HOCHDORF](https://inside.hochdorf.com/en/five-steps-to-create-your-own-infant-formula-brand-with-hochdorf?hsLang=en) ![Monique Inderbitzin](https://inside.hochdorf.com/hubfs/Mitarbeiter%20Fotos/C_PIC_inderbitzin_2018_Hochformat.jpg) By [Monique Inderbitzin](https://inside.hochdorf.com/en/five-steps-to-create-your-own-infant-formula-brand-with-hochdorf/author/monique-inderbitzin?hsLang=en) - May 12, 2023 [![Product innovation: new Bimbosan Riso PH](https://inside.hochdorf.com/hubfs/HOCHDORF%20Inside/Ausgabe%2011/Riso%20PH_Blog%20klein.jpg)](https://inside.hochdorf.com/en/alternative-new-bimbosan-riso-ph-product?hsLang=en) ##### [Product innovation: new Bimbosan Riso PH](https://inside.hochdorf.com/en/alternative-new-bimbosan-riso-ph-product?hsLang=en) ![Karin Bucher](https://inside.hochdorf.com/hubfs/Blog/Portraitbilder%20Autoren/Karin-Bucher-150x150.png) By [Karin Bucher](https://inside.hochdorf.com/en/alternative-new-bimbosan-riso-ph-product/author/karin-bucher?hsLang=en) - November 10, 2021 [![From the meadow to baby's tummy](https://inside.hochdorf.com/hubfs/HOCHDORF%20Inside/Ausgabe%2011/Baby%20Care%20Blog%20klein.jpg)](https://inside.hochdorf.com/en/from-the-meadow-to-babys-tummy?hsLang=en) ##### [From the meadow to baby's tummy](https://inside.hochdorf.com/en/from-the-meadow-to-babys-tummy?hsLang=en) ![Monique Inderbitzin](https://inside.hochdorf.com/hubfs/Mitarbeiter%20Fotos/C_PIC_inderbitzin_2018_Hochformat.jpg) By [Monique Inderbitzin](https://inside.hochdorf.com/en/from-the-meadow-to-babys-tummy/author/monique-inderbitzin?hsLang=en) - November 10, 2021 #### Contact Hochdorf Holding Ltd Siedereistrasse 9 Post office box 691 6281 Hochdorf Switzerland +41 41 914 65 65 [hochdorf@hochdorf.com](mailto:hochdorf@hochdorf.com) - - #### Site map - [Home](https://www.hochdorf.com/en/) - [Company](https://www.hochdorf.com/en/company/about-us/) - [Investors](https://www.hochdorf.com/en/investors/reports-presentations/) - [Media](https://www.hochdorf.com/en/media/press-releases/) - [Career](https://www.hochdorf.com/en/career/) - [Contact](https://hochdorf.com/en/contact/) #### Newsletter Subscription [![Subscribe to our newsletter](https://no-cache.hubspot.com/cta/default/3480252/53c6417d-812f-4360-94dd-d347bf4644b2.png)](https://cta-redirect.hubspot.com/cta/redirect/3480252/53c6417d-812f-4360-94dd-d347bf4644b2) [![Hochdorf_Logo_Quer_RGB_neg](https://inside.hochdorf.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Logos/Hochdorf_Logo_Quer_RGB_neg.png?width=4167&name=Hochdorf_Logo_Quer_RGB_neg.png "Hochdorf_Logo_Quer_RGB_neg")](https://www.hochdorf.com/en) © Hochdorf Ltd [Privacy Policy](https://www.hochdorf.com/en/privacy-policy/)  I  [Imprint](https://www.hochdorf.com/en/imprint/)
